Fix a mistake
Wobbly piping lines: why it happens and how to fix it
The line snakes from side to side of where you meant it to go.
Quick answer
A likely cause is dragging the tip on the surface, so every bump in the icing pushes it sideways. The fix: lift the tip about 1 cm and let the icing fall onto the line while you move a little slower.
What it looks like
- The bead swings back and forth across the line instead of sitting on it.
- Small kinks or S-bends appear in what should be a straight or smooth curve.
- Rings and rosettes look slightly lumpy or out of round.
Likely causes
- Dragging the tip on the surface, so every bump in the icing pushes it sideways.
- Steering with your wrist or fingers instead of moving your whole arm.
- Moving faster than the icing comes out, so the line gets pulled and twitches.
- Icing that is too stiff for writing, which makes you squeeze hard and shake.
How to fix it
Lift the tip and let the line fall
Touch down to start, then lift the tip about 1 cm and let the icing drop onto the grey line. Watch where the line lands, not the tip.
Slow down a little
Match your hand speed to the flow of icing. If the line looks stretched or thin, you are moving faster than you are squeezing.
Move from the shoulder
Keep your wrist fairly still and move your forearm. Rest your other hand under the bag for support if it helps.
Check the icing
For lines and writing, the icing should flow with gentle pressure. If you need to squeeze hard, soften it slightly before trying again.
Where it shows up on our sheets
It is most common with line, zigzag, loops, letters, rosette and scrolls. These sheets have strokes where the scorer looks for it first:
| Sheet | Tip | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Lines and dots | 3 | strokes 1 to 3 (line) |
| Zigzags and waves | 3 | strokes 1 and 2 (zigzag) and 3 to 5 (line) |
| Loops | 3 | strokes 1 to 4 (loops) |
| Block letters | 3 | strokes 1 and 2 (letters) |
| Rosettes | 1M | strokes 1 to 8 (rosette) |
| C and S scrolls | 21 | strokes 1 to 4 (scrolls) |
How Icing Coach spots it
Icing Coach finds the centre of your bead along each line and compares it with the template. When the centre swings to both sides of the line, it marks a wobble zone and replays that part with the ghost nozzle.
Every score uses the four corner markers on the printed sheet to flatten your photo onto the template, so it compares your icing with the exact shapes you piped over. How the score works.
Sheets to practise it on
These have the line, zigzag, loops, letters where it shows up most. Pipe one, score it, then pipe it again and compare. You need tip 3.
Lines and dots practice sheet
Straight lines and round dots with a plain round tip. The first sheet everyone pipes: it teaches steady pressure and a clean finish.
Zigzags and waves practice sheet
Sharp zigzags and flowing waves. Practise turning smoothly while the bead stays the same width.
Loops practice sheet
Rows of small e-loops and tall cursive l-loops. The rhythm behind cursive lettering and decorative borders.
Block letters practice sheet
Spell CAKE and LOVE in plain capital letters. Practise stopping, lifting and starting again cleanly.
