Zigzags and waves practice sheet (tip 3, free PDF)
Quick answer
The zigzags and waves sheet is free to download and print. It is a beginner sheet for round tip 3 with 5 strokes of zigzag and line and takes about 10 minutes: print the A4 or US Letter PDF at 100%, pipe over the grey shapes in the numbered order, then photograph it for a score out of 100.
Sharp zigzags and flowing waves. Practise turning smoothly while the bead stays the same width.
You need a piping bag with tip 3 (round).
Free for personal practice. Print at 100% scale ("actual size").
What the zigzags and waves sheet trains
Once a straight line feels calm, this sheet adds turning. The first two rows are zigzags with sharp corners, the second one tighter than the first. The last three rows are smooth waves with a long, a short and a medium swing.
The two shapes need opposite habits. On a zigzag you keep squeezing and turn the tip on the spot at every corner, so the point stays crisp. On a wave you never stop: move your whole arm, not just your wrist, and keep the same speed whether the swing is big or small. The goal on every row is a bead that stays the same width through the turns.

Stroke by stroke
Bead is how wide the icing should be (or how big each unit is); speed is how fast to move along the line.
| # | What you pipe | Bead | Speed | Bag angle | Squeeze rhythm | Cue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | a 287 mm zigzag that repeats every 16 mm | 3 mm, every 16 mm | 12 mm/s | 45° | steady | Sharp corners: keep squeezing and turn the tip on the spot. |
| 2 | a 309 mm zigzag that repeats every 10 mm | 3 mm, every 10 mm | 12 mm/s | 45° | steady | Tighter zigzag: go slower so each peak stays crisp and even. |
| 3 | a 209 mm wave that repeats every 32 mm | 3 mm, every 32 mm | 12 mm/s | 45° | steady | Let the wave flow: move your whole arm, not just your wrist. |
| 4 | a 206 mm wave that repeats every 20 mm | 3 mm, every 20 mm | 12 mm/s | 45° | steady | A shorter wave: same speed, smaller swing. |
| 5 | a 200 mm wave that repeats every 26 mm | 3 mm, every 26 mm | 12 mm/s | 45° | steady | Last one: aim for peaks that are all the same height. |

Watch the ghost nozzle
Press play and pipe along with the green ghost: it moves at each stroke's target speed.
Stroke 1 of 5
Sharp corners: keep squeezing and turn the tip on the spot.
Mistakes to watch for on this sheet
Compare the peaks along one row. If some corners have a blob of icing and others are thin, you paused or sped up there; on the waves, check that every crest reaches the same height.
- Wobbly line
Most likely on strokes 1 and 2 (zigzag) and 3 to 5 (line). Lift the tip about 1 cm and let the icing fall onto the line while you move a little slower.
- Thin then thick
Most likely on strokes 1 and 2 (zigzag) and 3 to 5 (line). Keep the same squeeze and the same speed from start to finish, following the pacer.
- Gaps and breaks
Most likely on strokes 1 and 2 (zigzag) and 3 to 5 (line). Keep the same gentle squeeze all the way and only stop squeezing at the very end.
- Drifting off the line
Most likely on strokes 1 and 2 (zigzag) and 3 to 5 (line). Hold the bag at 45 degrees and aim the tip right on the grey line, not beside it.
- Icing off the template
Most likely on strokes 3 to 5 (line). Pipe only on the grey shapes and wipe off stray drips before you take the photo.
