About tip 2D

Tip 2D is a closed star tip for deep drop flowers and tall swirls. On our drop flower sheet it makes a whole flower in one move: hold the bag straight up, squeeze while you give a quarter twist, stop, then lift.

Twist the same way and the same amount each time so the petals line up from one flower to the next. The sheet has two rows of flowers and a ring with one more in the centre; matching sizes come from matching squeeze lengths.

What tip 2D pipes

  • Deep drop flowers
  • Tall swirls

How to pipe with it

The rhythm and bag angle our sheets use for each shape, in the order you squeeze.

  1. Drop flowers: squeeze, twist, stop, lift

Hold the bag straight up, squeeze while you give a quarter twist, stop, then lift. Hold the bag at 90 degrees, straight up.

How big our sheets size it

Each template on our sheets is drawn as wide as the icing should be. For tip 2D, that is about:

Your bead can come out a little bigger or smaller depending on your icing and how hard you squeeze. The score checks that it stays even and on the template.

Every stroke tip 2D pipes on our sheets

Drop flowers

  • Stroke 1: 5 drop flowers, each about 18 mm across. Hold the bag straight up, squeeze while you give a quarter twist, stop, then lift.
  • Stroke 2: 5 drop flowers, each about 18 mm across. Twist the same way each time so the petals line up.
  • Stroke 3: 8 drop flowers, each about 18 mm across. A flower ring: start at the top, work round clockwise, then finish with one in the middle.

Mistakes to watch with tip 2D

  • Different sizes: Count the same rhythm for every one (squeeze, ease, pull) so each gets the same amount of icing.
  • Peaks on dots: Stop squeezing before you lift, then flick the tip sideways to break the icing off cleanly.
  • Drifting off the line: Hold the bag at 45 degrees and aim the tip right on the grey line, not beside it.
