Quick answer
Use tip 1M for big rosettes and swirls for cupcake tops. Our free sheets use it for 8 strokes on the rosettes sheet: rosette (9 mm), with the bag held straight up.
Tip 1M is the big open star tip for rosettes and swirls on cupcake tops. On our rosette sheet it makes eight rosettes of the same size, which is a good way to see whether your last swirl matches your first.
A rosette is one steady squeeze with the bag straight up: start in the middle, spiral out and close the outer ring, then stop squeezing before you lift and flick away along the swirl. Keep the squeeze the same from rosette to rosette so they all reach the grey circle.
The rhythm and bag angle our sheets use for each shape, in the order you squeeze.
Start in the middle, spiral out in a circle, and finish by closing the outer ring. Hold the bag at 90 degrees, straight up.
Each template on our sheets is drawn as wide as the icing should be. For tip 1M, that is about:
| Technique | Bead or unit size on our sheets |
|---|---|
| rosette | about 9 mm |
Your bead can come out a little bigger or smaller depending on your icing and how hard you squeeze. The score checks that it stays even and on the template.
You need tip 1M on 3 of the 30 days in the 30-day piping challenge:
